About Herm

Herm Allen attended the public school system in Cleveland, Ohio where he finished fourth in his graduating class. This, along with being actively involved in student government, athletics and the school newspaper, provided the necessary “stuff” to be admitted to Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Being a first-generation college student, this was both an exciting and intimidating experience; not to mention “culture shock.” Herm went from a predominantly African-American school experience to a predominantly white institution.

Up for the challenge, he decided to choose accounting for his major. This was one of the most challenging majors at Wittenberg. He began his college experience on an upbeat attaining a 3.00 overall GPA his first two terms, then…

The bottom fell out. Not more than a year later after graduating fourth in his class he was now on academic probation. The following fall term (sophomore year) was more of the same, except for this time he was a candidate for academic dismissal – that’s right, a one-way ticket home. Having to face his family with this was probably the most humbling experience he has had to face.

Now it was time to F.O.C.U.S.© or GO HOME!

Once he “discovered” what it took to overcome the obstacles he encountered, Herm made steady progress towards receiving his degree in psychology of which he did receive. To top that, Herm decided to move on to graduate school to receive his master’s degree in college student personnel services from Miami University (no, the one in Ohio thank you). Drawing from his undergraduate experience Herm brought a lot of that to his graduate program as well as into his career in student affairs.

If it were not for influential individuals in his life at the time of his academic “slide” and his commitment to succeeding, only God knows what may have happened. Herm has dedicated his career ensuring that students, regardless of age, F.O.C.U.S.© on their future. One of Herm’s favorite quotations is, “students don’t care how much you know until you show them how much you care.”

Herm has shared his F.O.C.U.S.© principles with students, faculty and student affairs professionals and has included the principles in his new book, F.O.C.U.S.© On Your Future: 5 Simple Principles to Reach Your Goals. Herm is the owner of Herm Allen Coaching in Clemson, SC where he resides.
